The International Biomedical Research Alliance (IBRA) was created in 2005 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to support the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program and associated global PhD and MD/PhD training programs based in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health, America’s largest biomedical research organization. Its goal was to assure the financial viability and scientific excellence of the Scholars’ program by supplementing government funding.

In 2024, IBRA expanded its mission to supports programs that promote biomedical research excellence through events and scholarships designed to enrich and broaden the perspectives of researchers and their supporters in every stage of their careers as they train to become the next leaders in biomedical research.

IBRA was established with a clear vision: to support the next generation of biomedical researchers by linking them with the resources, partnerships, and programs they need to thrive. The organization’s unique position allows it to serve as an intermediary, facilitating connections between institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Oxford University, Cambridge University, and various industry stakeholders. These partnerships help biomedical researchers engage in collaborative and cross-disciplinary work, pushing the boundaries of innovation in the biomedical sciences.
